MONTALCINO room


It is a municipality of 5.115 habitants of Siena Province. It is a famous city for Brunello wine production. Montalcino is located on the north-west of Amiata Mountain, at the end of Orcia Valley, on the administrative border with Grosseto. The city's name comes from latin words “mons” (mountain) and “ilex” (ilex), that is “ilex's mountain”. Among the local traditions it is very famous the “Sagra del Tordo” during the last sunday of october and the Opening Hunting Tournament every mounth of august. From 567 metres of high, Montalcino dominates all the around countryside, on a hill where is the strong forteenth-century Fortress. Among lanes, artisan shops, small café and tipical alimentary products shops (also honey and local biscuits are famous, they are known as “dead's bones”), there are also the Municipal Palace, the Episcopal Palace that hosts Montalcino's Museums (the Diocesan one, the civic one and the archeological one, with important Sienes autors' works of XIII-XIV century, such as Bartalo of Fredi, Sodoma, Bartolomeo Neroni), the ancient Sant'Antimo's crucifix, dated in the middle of 1100 and Sant'Agostino, Sant'Egidio and San Francesco's churches, built between XIII and XIV century, in addition to the Aid Vergin's Sanctuary.

How to get to Montalcino
Going along Florence-Siena clearway. In Siena warning to indications S.S.2 Cassia-Rome on the road (exit south Siena). Along Cassia, 20 min later, there is Buonconvento; after there is the direction on the right to Montalcino.
